I don´t know about you, but it´s been a very long time since I played a game with a vampire theme that I truly enjoyed. Truth be told, I really miss Troika Games awesome action/RPG Vampire: The masquerade bloodlines (the game was released for PC back in November of 2004). In the matter of fact, I still play the game to this very day (thanks to fan mods, patches and whatnot). However, like I said, games of that kind are a rarity nowadays (I like dark, evil and sexy vampire games). That´s also why I got quite excited when I found out about DONTNOD Entertainment and Focus Home Interactive´s upcoming vampire action/RPG Vampyr (for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One).
I honestly had no idea about the existence of Vampyr, so if it hadn´t been for my brother (Jonas). Then I might have missed out on the game completely (I “might” have found out about Vampyr´s existence up on its release next year though). Any ways, I have just watched the +14 minute long Alpha gameplay video for Vampyr, and I think the game looks really impressive so far (the game runs on Unreal Engine 4). I also like the setting of Vampyr:
“Vampyr is an action RPG set in the darkly atmospheric streets of 20th century London. Recently turned into a Vampire, an eminent doctor try to understand his new affliction while he attempts to stem the irrepressible thirst that constantly drives him to take human lives. How human could a vampire be, when he must feed?” – DONTNOD Entertainment
Furthermore, it´s most definitely worth pointing out that DONTNOD is the same studio that created Remember Me and Life is strange. So they know how to create interesting characters, dialogs and plots (Vampyr focuses on a doctor who becomes a vampire after he is bitten by a patient thought to have the Spanish flu). Even so, I´m somewhat surprised to hear that DONTNOD is working on a vampire game such as Vampyr. I honestly thought that the game was made by Monolith Productions (I love that studio). As Vampyr is a very dark, ghoulish, scary and violent game (at least based on what I´ve seen so far). So I take it that DONTNOD Entertainment wants to explore their dark/grotesque side with Vampyr?
Well, time will tell. So far, so good though. Hell, I even enjoyed the E3 trailer and the concept teaser trailer as well. However, there are some concerns which I would like to highlight. Well, for starter, the combat aspects of Vampyr seem to need some adjusting and fine tuning (the fights in the Alpha gameplay video looks rather stiff I have to say). Furthermore, the graphical apartment appears to be in need of some tender love and care as well (the facial motions that people when they speak, for example). Nevertheless, Vampyr is still a really interesting, impressive and atmospheric game with no doubt (especially since the game is done by a small studio working on a modest budget).
So I really hope that I will get a chance to try Vampyr before the game drops to Windows, PS4 and Xbox One sometime next year (perhaps there will be a playable demo a couple of months before Vampyr´s release?). As I have a feeling that we won´t get to play a new Vampire: The masquerade game anytime soon…
And with that said, what do you think about Vampyr so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
