As technology advances, mobile phones and other handheld devices are quickly replacing game consoles as the preferred gaming machines. However, they are not as powerful and though they can now relay even the most intricate online slots, they need a little help.
Area 120, a Google incubator has launched a new project that it has named GameSnacks. The objective of the project is to make it easy for gamers in emerging markets to enjoy casual games even with a below-par internet connection.
The project wants to facilitate the conveyance of HTML5-based browser games and make them load faster and play not only in low-quality internet connection situations but also in low-end phones.
GameSnacks motivation to follow this line of innovation comes from the understanding that the vast majority of internet visitors now do so using mobile phones. However, these devices have low memories and come with unrealistically expensive data plans especially for gaming.
Besides, most people that use mobile phones are in emerging economies. These realities make web gaming a preserve of very few since most games are not optimized for poor internet connections or devices with low memory.
Research shows that one in every two mobile phone users will navigate from a page if it lasts three seconds to load. In 2G or 3G networks, a low-end phone will take twice that much time, maybe more, to load.
Area 120 through GameSnacks, as such, wants to reduce the duration it takes to load a game while also improving the performance of the said browser games.
Initial attempts have sought to reduce the size of the games that are uploaded, and condensing the games’ media such as script, sounds and images, and to make such media load only when required.
Through the said endeavors, GameSnacks has about five games now. All these games carry familiar titles such as Bridge of Doom, Road Fury, and Jewelish Blitz among a few more.
Now, any gamer with a phone that has connections speeds of less than 1 MBps and a memory of 1 GB can easily load and play these games. Area 120 claims that it is possible to load the games even with as little connection speeds as 500 Kbps.
The titles on GameSnacks are compatible with the mobile web, touch keyboard, as well as PC mouse and keyboard. Besides, they are a lot similar to casual games.
So, gamers do not need any special instructions in-order to play the games. GameSnacks titles are simple and casual; the kind that you need to fill up the idle moments you experience when in a queue, waiting for the doctor’s appointment or when standing in line at the bus stop.
