Motor oil’s main functions are to protect, cool, lubricate and reduce friction between moving parts, improving performance, optimizing fuel consumption and preventing a number of vehicle problems.
Some doubts are common when checking, buying or exchanging oil, so we’ve selected seven tips so you do not make mistakes and keep lubrication efficient.
1 – Check the oil level periodically
The engine oil usually drops to 1 liter per thousand kilometers. The recommendation is for the lubricant level to be checked every 15 days or at least every month. Remember that it is ideal to read the dipstick with the engine cool and flat.
2 – Do not wipe the dipstick
The fabric can leave residues of the old oil contaminating the new lubricant. Always use absorbent paper to clean the dipstick when changing the lubricant.
3 – Do not fill the oil
By doing this, the new product is mixed with the used one and ends up contaminated. Replace all crankcase oil with a new one; on average every 5,000 or 10,000 miles.
4 – Use lubricants having the same base
It is possible to mix lubricants of different brands, provided they have the same base (synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral), viscosity and grade API and SAE. Otherwise, lubrication efficiency is impaired and causes serious engine hazards.
5 – Close the plug correctly
The stopper is also known as a screw. It closes the oil sump drain and should be screwed in properly to prevent leaks. Have the motor oil replaced by a qualified professional so that the plug is closed without excessive force and without loosening it.
6 – Avoid using loose additives
By mixing this type of product with the oil, the formulation becomes unbalanced, resulting in sludge and even inefficient lubrication of the engine. Many oils have already been added, but always follow the specification in the owner’s manual.
7 – Replace the oil filter
It is responsible for filtering the metal impurities generated by the friction between moving parts of the engine, in addition to waste generated by combustion. The motor oil needs to be changed every 10 to 15 thousand kilometers along with the oil, otherwise the impurities will accumulate and can damage important parts of the engine like valves, cylinders, rings and pistons.
You can order all quality motor oil for your car here or go to a good mechanic workshop that works with the best brands of automotive lubricants in the market and has a team able to perform the oil change with quality and efficiency.
