Italy – baccarat homeland
On the Internet, you may come across a big number of theories regarding the origin of this game. Some say that it began in France and some – in Italy. The second version is more popular and accurate, so most researchers stick to it.
Historians say that for the first time baccarat was mentioned in Italy at the beginning of the 15th century. It was invented by Felix Falguiere who called the game ‘baccara’ which means zero in Italian. As the game evolved, it spread to France where they spelt it ‘baccarat’. Nowadays, this spelling is adopted all over the world, including South Africa, Asia, and Australia.
People say that Felix invented the baccarat based on an old Etruscan legend. It told a story of a virgin that threw dice and became a priestess for landing eight or nine. For six or seven, she would lose all her roles in the community. And if throwing less than 6, she was sentenced to death.
Chemin de Fer
When baccarat reached France in the 1800s, many locals called it Chemin de Fer or Chemmy, as a shorter version. King Charles VIII liked baccarat and decided to make it a royal pastime. Thus, only the very wealthy and noble Frenchmen could play Chemmy with the King. Centuries have passed before this game could be played by regular people.
At the same time, French travelers brought baccarat to England where this game got comprehensive love and attention. There, Ian Fleming created James Bond whose favourite game was baccarat.
Baccarat today
Within the past decade, baccarat has experienced another boost in popularity mainly because online gambling makes this game available to anyone with a computer and Internet. An opportunity to play baccarat at any time and place erased the misconception that this game is only for the elite. Entry bets are quite affordable and it is easy to master the rules.
However, there are still many players who prefer playing baccarat offline, especially in Asia. Macau, by the way, is considered the capital of Baccarat and in 2017, its casinos have made 88% of their gambling profits from this game!
