Rainbow 6 Siege and Ghost Recon Wildlands impress, The Division falls short and more South Park.
First of all, I would like to say what an awesome job Aisha Tyler did as the host for Ubisoft, a french-speaking company. She said the right jokes more often than not, and carried her enthusiasm throughout the hour, making it much more tolerable. Only her effort to “make a meme” was cringe-worthy, and her overall performance saved the day.
Ubisoft’s presenters were uncomfortably monotonous at points, owing mainly to their discomfort in conversing in english. Geneviève “livinpink” Forget, more widely known as a cast member of Rollplay Solum alongside John Paul (JP) “itmeJP” Mcdaniel, Geoff “iNcontroL” Robinson, Ryan “Ryuzilla” Moore and Dungeon Master Neal “Koibu0” Erickson, displayed the most enthusiasm for her game Rainbow Six, and rightly so: it was an awesome feature.
Onto the games, South Park : The Fractured But Whole was featured first with only an announcement trailer, nothing much special there, but it was warming the crowd up for their new IP, For Honor. This game looks insanely good, mirroring dynasty warriors in terms of soldier combat (albeit much more active), and is centered on player-against-player dueling. Think Chivalry but a lot more arcadey.
The Crew is getting an expansion pack, called Wild Run (November 17) adding more fan-requested zones and cars into the game. Trails Fusion has a new pack, the Awesome Level Max tracks (July 14), featuring a cat on a unicorn for their promo material, interesting but ultimately uninformative. Other new iterations of franchises: Trackmania Turbo, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Just Dance 2016, Anno 2205.
The two new IPs you should be getting hyped for are Rainbow Six and The Division, but you should receive them with different attitudes. The Division seems to be suffering from MMO disease, in which it becomes uninteresting and repetitive after all the mechanics have been explored by the player. Think of an instance-limited PvP version of borderlands for a comparison. Rainbow Six looks great, a tactical squad shooter meant for a team of players. Think Payday but with much more strategy and teamwork. I’d say Rainbow Six hype 8/10, The Division Hype 6.5/10.
Open-world military shooter Ghost-Recon Wildlands claims to be first of its kind, but it seems to take inspiration from many other open-world games; Far Cry’s transportation system, Red Faction’s free pathing and with a few of their own innovations like having a squad follow you around, having a 3rd to 1st person shooter combat system and having many “open world” features in terms of choice in missions and decisions for the story. Looks like a great game with plenty of replayability, but I sincerely hope all missions don’t boil down to simply either STEALTH, AMBUSH or LONG RANGE.
