“Mortal Kombat X” has just been released to Windows, PS4 and Xbox One. And that´s great of course. In fact, the PS4 version has a average grade of 83.41% via gamerankings.com.
So one would think that all of this would call for a big celebration right? Well, naturally yes. But sadly enough the party mood got ruined thanks to some haters/trolls.
Sure, Mortal Kombat X’s Producer Shaun Himmeric´s death threats on Twitter ain´t news. As it all took place back in March (March 27th to be exact).
But here´s the thing, these kind of threats just keeps on coming in. No matter if you´re a dev or a Gamer. And this is the kind of people that makes the video game industry toxicated.
And it´s NOT because their Gamers, no, it´s because their just fu**ing assholes that just happens to game. Just take Omar King´s (he deleted his Twitter account after all the fuss) death threat against Mortal Kombat X’s Producer Shaun Himmeric on Twitter for example (as seen above).
The guy also threaten Himmeric´s wife and daughters. And that was the last drop for Himmeric, so he quite Twitter back in March.
And i don´t blame him for doing so. Because he shouldn´t even have to deal with crap like that (no one should). So also understand why Himmeric made this statements about the matter:
“I cannot deal with the threats of violence to my wife and now young daughter. Threats of sexual violence are even more disturbing.” – Shaun Himmeric, Mortal Kombat X Producer
Then again, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo admitted not so long ago that Twitter sucks at dealing with haters and trolls.
“We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years,” Costolo said. “It’s no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day.”
“I’m frankly ashamed of how poorly we’ve dealt with this issue during my tenure as CEO. It’s absurd. There’s no excuse for it. I take full responsibility for not being more aggressive on this front. It’s nobody’s fault but mine, and it’s embarrassing.”
“Everybody on the leadership team knows this is vital,” – Twitter CEO Dick Costolo
Not that it justify any threats or abuse of any kind on Twitter (or anywhere else for that matter), but at least Twitter´s CEO admitted that Twitter has a lot of work to do on that front.
Personally, i think it´s about time that Twitter (and other social media services) starts to take threats seriously, and start to deal with the people who actually send out the threats.
Me, i have already had my fair share of both trolls and haters. And they are THE worst kind of scum there is…
