I don´t know what´s up with Japanese video game companies and video uploading sites (Youtube in this case). But it seems to be almost impossible to make a video if the game is made by a Japanese developer.
At least if you plan to uploaded to the internet and earn money from it. I have heard copyright nightmare stories about Japanese devs and Youtube in the past.
Stories about companys such as SEGA (Totalbiscuit and “Shining Force III”), Capcom (when Angry Joe talked about “Street Fighter V“) in the past.
But it seems like Nintendo are THE worst video game company in the world when it comes to copyright claims on gameplay videos (it seems to be just as bad with interviews and reviews).
And talk about deja vu. Because some months ago i talked to O.J (my brother) about Nintendo and uploading Nintendo related gameplay videos to Youtube. Basically, i just said that it´s no point doing so.
Because Nintendo would just copyright flag all of our videos. In short, it´s not worth the risk (been there, done that. But with Square Enix).
So i was not surprised to hear what happened to “Angry Joe” and his Nintendo videos (Zelda and Mario Kart). Here´s the thing though. Angry Joe has 1,8 million Youtube subscribers.
And even so, he still get´s copyright claims by Nintendo? So that basically means that anyone that has less (or as many) subs as Angry Joe, runs a very high risk to get copyright flagged by Nintendo.
One might think that. But there´s more to it than just that. For example, how comes that Youtubers such as “AVGN” and “Game Grumps” don´t have the same copyright problems like Angry Joe does?
It made me think about that “Nintendo Youtube partnership” (which gives Nintendo a percentage of your ad revenue on your YouTube videos) deal that we all heard about last year.
Because “apparently”, that´s THE only bulletproof solution to be 100% safe from copyright claims by Nintendo.
But as you might figure. Nintendo will cherry pick all of their partnerships (rightfully so though, it’s their company afterall).
And i´m quite sure that one of the requirements that must be meet, is that you´re a major Youtube player (+10K channels perhaps?).
So IF you´re a small Youtube channel. Then don´t hold your breath for a Nintendo partnership deal. And as you might figure, all of this has sparked a lot of angry rants and controversy.
Just checkout some of the comments that i found on Angry Joe´s “WTF Nintendo!?! Seriously? – Angry Rant” video:
“i’ve seen game grumps play shitons of ninty games so maybe there’s something else going on here?, I dunno I just find it annoying that you get so many trolls using this as an excuse to dis the entire company and their games off for this, like the other companys have’nt ever done anything this bad… not defending nintys decision, outside of their games and advertisements at game awards and directs, ninty has been makin some awful decisions, i’m not sure how their company is structured but their marketing and distribution needs a massive overhaul, and they need to really be rethinkin their stances on things like this.
This is really free publicity and considering how much unfair hatred is thrown at the wii u they needed every bit of ammo they could get.” – Chris Ogilvie
Sorry Joe, but Nintendo is the absolute WORST when it comes to their stuff online. You see, STUPID people like Satoru Iwata think this is 1993, so if I (or anyone…) wants to put out an awesome Bayonetta or Mario Kart or w/e video. NOPE
THE NINTENDO EMPIRE WILL NOT ALLOW UNAUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTION OF THEIR PRECIOUS WORK And unlike XBOX, you know… they listened to the feedback about DRM and whatnot, or I don’t know… Riot Games or whatever company, Nintendo don’t give TWO FUCKS about this.” – TS Prism
“Good Job Nintendo. Joe would make a Good review of your games that would surely interest tons of people into buying these games but now he won’t be able to because you are bunch of brainless douchebags who just can’t understand that your games are being advertised for you and you don’t even need to pay for that.” – sebotrp
And let´s be honest, this is NOT going to help Nintendo sell more games, consoles (or whatever). So i think it´s safe to say that Nintendo needs to get their act together asap.
