I just want to point the following things out before i share my thoughts and opinions on this subject. 1. I´m not jealous, 2. I have suspected this for the last 1-2 years or so, and 3. Youtube won´t ever be the same again. With that said, let´s begin shall we? I´m going to start with telling my (our) experiences of Youtube. We started to create videos for Youtube back in 2011, and at that time Youtube was somewhat “different“ from the Youtube that we know of today.
And I’m not just talking about new designs, features, functions and such. No, because the actual video content on Youtube was quite different back then as well. However, if we return to the present instead. Then Youtube is nothing like the 2011 version of Youtube (that was the year that we started to create content for Youtube). And here´s the main reason why. Youtube has become a video platform for (and by) kids. Just think about it for a second. Youtube is now flooded with cat videos and childish videos (I am not even exaggerating either).
So now I’m starting to understand how Pewdiepie (he became a Youtube user back in 2010) has become such a big Youtube star, his simply feeding an army of millions and millions of really young people (kids). And this became clear to me a few days ago thanks to the Youtube Gamer/personality Athene. In fact, these are his exact words on the subject:
“30% of the top channels right now are literally channels for little babies” “The Youtube landscape has changed. Just like MTV has changed over the years. No one watches TV for the music anymore. People listen on music on the phones” “So YouTuber´s if you don´t understand why you don´t have a lot of views. Then this is what you have to change your content to” – Athene
So in other words. If you want to make it big on Youtube, then start creating childish (Smosh anyone?) videos that is aimed towards an audience of really young kids. And this is the reason WHY “Heart Stone” is Athene´s number one source for views on Youtube right now. It’s simply because the Youtube demographic landscape has changed (a lot of kids watch and play “Heart Stone“. Due to it´s simple nature and rules). And you could really tell that Athene was seriously frustrated over this in his “YouTube Secrets Exposed! You’ll Never Believe What Athene Has Uncovered!” video. I mean, I have seen totally rubbish, childish and stupid videos that get millions of views on Youtube.
It´s sad but true, because Youtube has been taken over by kids. And you know what, you don´t have to believe me (or Athene for that matter). As the numbers don´t lie (just check the most view’s videos, and the most popular Youtube channels). And these are some of the many reactions and comments that I’ve seen about this subject:
“You are so right. Guess why PewDiePie grew so much. He is just screaming all the fucking time and giving me a headache. 8 year olds LOVE him. And he’s smart so he continues making childish content. But you’re right children has taken over Youtube. I remember the days when no-one of my friends had a youtube account because you had to be 18 and no-one dared to make an account. Now days 5 – 12 year olds have like 5 accounts each. Children has taken over Youtube. #RIP” – Malte Nordstrand
“Ah… Time to change all of my content to My Little Pony and Duplo unboxing videos.” – Reversal
“You say : We always checking statistics…. and i ask : why ? You got 730k Subscribers which is pretty good i suppose… but the revenue shouldn’t really be that great? Most of the Cash comes from Twitch, without a doubt. Just do what you love here, and fuck the money. STAY TRUE MOTHERFUCKER :)” – Curious Child
“So youtube is getting dumber by the day. And is being taken over by kids. So maybe older people and adults need a new medium for video’s? Maybe daily motion would be a good alternative. probaly no kids there. And then get some more better content. On the other hand youtube is already way to big. Sad to see the troll athene go. But understandable. Besides If athene would go back to his trolling. I would have prefered for furious and his brother to return to his videos aswell.” – praetoriancorps
So what do you guys/girls think about all of this? And will you change your content on your Youtube channel in order to appeal to a really young audience?
