I bet that most of you (our dear readers) are way too young to remember a website called “FileFront”. However, in my case, it was the go to place for game patches, demos, news and whatnot. Well, at least between 1999 and 2005. Because around 2005 sometime I started to get pretty much everything that I needed from PC Gamer Sweden (PCG had their own DVDs and CDs at the time, then they moved on to hosting their own demos, files and whatnot via their homepage).

GameFront has been sleeping in the digital freezer since 2016. So it was about time for the site to become a live again.

Anyways, over time I forgot all about FileFront (studies + work stole most of my time away) So it wasn’t until the year of 2010 when “FileFront” became “GameFront” that I started to use the site again, and I did so mainly because a lot of people recommended me to give the site a try. Well, I used the GameFront site on and off for many years, and I didn’t stop using the site until it was shut down in April of 2016. Long story short, I haven’t heard a word about GameFront since then.

That’s also why I got really surprised when I received an e-mail from Danny King (GameFront community manager) where King informed me that GameFront is up and running again:

“Hello, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Mikey and I’m the Community Manager at GameFront. GameFront (also known as FileFront) was shut down nearly two years ago, and in the process, nearly 20 years of history was lost. I just wanted to reach out and let you know that a team of volunteers from the original site (including myself), supported by the folks at DBolical (Owner of ModDB, IndieDB, VRDB, SlideDB etc) have fully restored the original GameFront and would love for you to cover the relaunch.

A lot of effort has gone into the restoration to make it as faithful as possible to the original. We’ve re-launched the site on https://www.gamefront.com/”Danny King, GameFront Community Manager

In February of 2010, Break Media acquired FileFront, and in November of the same year. FileFront became GameFront. As good as that might sound though, GameFront was shut down in April of 2016. However, in August of 2016, DBolical Pty Ltd (the owners of ModDB) acquired GameFront from Defy Media. Furthermore, if we fast forward to the now (March the 15th, to be exact), then GameFront launched their website just a couple of days ago.

In other words, that means that GameFront is alive again for the very first time since 2016. Other than that, I just found out that GameFront uploaded a Youtube video about their website relaunching plans not so long ago (you can watch the video further down the page). So you might want to give that one a look and see if your interested in GameFront, and as for those who have no idea (whatsoever) what GameFront is all about, then this information might be of help for you:

“Welcome to the all new GameFront, with every file, game, article and forum post, restored by the community, for the community. Launching March 11th 2018. Many thanks to the army of volunteers who have made this restoration a reality. Game on! The best serving of video game culture, since 1998. Whether you’re looking for the biggest collection of PC gaming files on the planet, tools, tips or advice, GameFront has you covered. Browse through over 90,000 mods, maps, tools and more. Game on! http://www.GameFront.com/”

filefront

Filefront launched back in 1999. However, at that time the site was called “FileLeech” (the website renamed itself from “FileLeech” to “FileFront” when it was bought by Ziff Davis Media Game Group in the late mid-2005).

And with that said, what’s your take on the relaunch of GameFront’s homepage? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
