Yacht Club has made three announcements regarding the physical release of Shovel Knight, and it isn’t all good news! Brace yourselves Xbox One owners.
First of all they have pushed back the release date from October 30th in Europe and November 3rd in the US – which is fair enough as they are including the expansion “Plague of Shadows” on the physical release and that has only just launched. Secondly the price has risen from $20 to $25 (roughly £16 or €22), the reason behind this is a strange one, on their official site Yacht Club had this to say;
“Although everyone initially agreed to a $19.99 price point, some retailers ran into trouble with limited space to show off their wares, and the rules in place about where games with certain prices are displayed. We didn’t want our ‘bargain priced’ game to go straight to the bargain bin of obscurity, so we had to raise the price.”
So they raised the price to ensure Shovel Knight gets some shelf space and not dumped into a bargain bin, I must say it’s the first time I’ve ever heard this! However, they state that retailers will honour the original price if you have already preordered! To sweeten this price raise even more they are packing in a full colour manual(!) and a digital soundtrack download, which significantly increases the value.
Lastly the Xbox One version has been cancelled! To further compound your pain, it is “in indefinite limbo” on the platform and it is all down to Microsoft and their “publishing policies on that platform that are totally beyond our control”! While this is a shame, the physical release is getting some serious love and I for one cannot wait to play this on October 30th!
What do you think about this news? Are you disappointed about the cancellation? Are Microsoft unwittingly stopping Indie Developers from publishing on the Xbox One?
Tell me in the comments section!
