Yu Suzuki sure knows how to please the Shenmue fans, because not only did he make us scream out of joy when he announced the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign (Sony brought a lot of focus to the project during their E3 press conference) on the 16th of June, Mr. Suzuki has also stated that he would love to see HD versions of Shenmue 1 and 2. A project which Mr. Suzuki hopes to become the producer of. Nice indeed, there´s only one little problem. SEGA owns the rights for both Shenmue 1 and 2, so it´s all up to SEGA really. As it´s their call, if they should allow Yu Suzuki to produce Shenmue 1 and 2 HD or not.
If that was the case, then Yu Suzuki hopes that he (and SEGA) will be able to release the HD versions of Shenmue 1 and 2 before Shenmue 3 gets release (Shenmue 1 and 2 HD would work as a good appetizer before the release of Shenmue 3). Anyhow, this is Yu Suzuki´s actual statement on the matter:
“I think that if Shenmue I and II could be released before Shenmue III, people would be able to understand the backstory and enjoy Shenmue III even more. And so I also personally strongly want this to happen, but as the rights are held by SEGA I’m not really in a position to be able to comment. However I will also express to SEGA that I really would like for them to be produced.” – Yu Suzuki
