I have to say that DEVGRU-P has become one of my favorite indie game developers in the world (don’t miss out on our interview with DEVGRU-P!). I mean, they have given us awesome titles such as “Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea!”, “Maid Mansion“, “Panzermadels: Tank dating simulator” and “Chemically Bonded” (that title won’t be released until June next year though). So I think it’s safe to say that DEVGRU-P has released quite a few interesting game titles over the years. That’s also why I got pretty darn excited when DEVGRU-P told us per e-mail that they have just launched a Kickstarter campaign for their brand-new visual novel “Where Poppies Grow” (the goal would be to collect 5,000 USD):
“Good Afternoon! I just wanted to reach out and announce that the OLEVN “Where Poppies Grow” launched on Kickstarter yesterday! This a game that I’m developing and is being published by DEVGRU-P!” – Nathan Bishop DEVGRU-P
So, what exactly is “Where Poppies Grow” all about then? Well, here’s the actual story for the game:
“War has erupted once again between the countries of Elestrea and Schusenfrasse, two small countries who both fight for their survival in the global arena. Though they share the same tongue and relative culture – rampant nationalism and expansionism has driven both to war-time and time again.
Conley Booker, a student and citizen of Elestrea, is drafted for the conflict. He sees this as an opportunity for adventure and to gain an identity similar to the characters in his cherished novels. Leaving his safe but monotonous life behind, he is funneled towards the front lines.
During his time at war, he grasps the ropes of responsibility as he is thrust into a leadership position despite his inexperience. After a pivotal and devastating loss, he wakes up on the battlefield to fine that his comrades are nowhere to be seen. Desperate to reunite with his friends and return home, he travels through enemy territory in hopes to find the new front line. This is a story about growth, adventure, and one man’s journey through war.”

I take it that there will be some romance and love scenes in “Where Poppies Grow”? Because that’s at least the vibes that I get from this picture.
As for features, these are the said launch features for “Where Poppies Grow”:
Features:
– Over 220,000 words – Where Poppies Grow was originally written as a novel, then adapted into a kinetic visual novel.
– Character sprites whose appearances change over the course of the conflict, as well as over 40 planned backgrounds.
– Over 20 planned event scenes to accurately depict both the hardships and camaraderie found in war.
– An original soundtrack with over 25 planned songs!

“Where poppies grow” is said to contain over 220,000 words. So I guess that the game is going to be a rather long visual novel experience.
So there you have it =) And “if” everything goes according to plan, then we should be able to play “Where Poppies Grow” sometime in October next year. So I wish DEVGRU-P the best of luck on Kickstarter!
