Way back in March this year, I wrote about Paulo aka “Amaweks” Andrés (his a Brazilian rom hacker/modder) extensive graphical hack of Mega Man 1 (NES Mega Man Redux). Well, guess what? Earlier today Andrés informed me that he has released a F2P Super Mario inspired game called MarloW in Apocalyptic Acid World.
And this is what Andrés told me:
Hi, TGG staff
I Amaweks, author of Megaman Redux Hack, the NES rom hack. First, a big thanks to Robin “V-Act” Ek for the kind words about my hack (And yes, I love the Megaman series, and really put love in this work, just about all my last vacation)
But beyond the hacks, I am also an independent game producer, and like to work on my authorial projects. It’s been a few months that I made a game inspired by Super Mario (with some differences in gameplay like Kid Chameleon). Unlike Mario, who works in a cute and cheerful world, my game is set in a dystopian future with the planet devastated. If you want to take a look and take your impressions, I would be happy to read anything you write about it, in addition to help in spreading the game.
I’m asking this not to seek fame (even that 15 minutes or 15 seconds o fame people look on youtube), but that the great difficulty for an independent developer today is to make your game to get people. Even distributing the game for free, it is difficult to make that the game is played, since it is just a drop
of water in an ocean of independent and amateur games. And I did the game, I spent time in the development, production, extensive testing, and free distribution to reach people, to be played. Thats what i seek as an artist.
Keep up the good journalism on games.” – Paulo aka “Amaweks” Andrés
That´s some really awesome news with no doubt. However, I did point out for Andrés that I was somewhat concerned about MarloW in Apocalyptic Acid World since Nintendo has been spitting out DMCA claims to the left and right for quite sometime now…Even so, Andrés reassured me that there is no need to be neither worried nor concerned:
“It’s ok, I didn’t used any graphics, music, or characters copyrighted by nintendo. My game is inspired in Super Mario, but it is an original game. So, I feel calm about the nintendo DMCA issue (a really sad issue). Thanks for the concern.” – Paulo aka “Amaweks” Andrés
So I really hope that Andrés is right. As I don´t like the idea of having MarloW in Apocalyptic Acid World end up in the same situation as AM2R did…Any ways, if you like what you´ve seen from MarloW so far, then you can download and try the game for free today =)
