It seems like the German indie developer Matthias Falk is writing the ultimate love letter to the 80s and 90s platform games with his 2D/3D platform game “Super Axe Boy” (for Windows, MAC and Linux, and “hopefully” PS4, Xbox One and Wii U as well). At least, that´s the vibes that I felt when I watched the “Super Axe Boy” Kickstarter video just now (and when I read about Falk´s ambitions and plans for the game). In fact, “Super Axe Boy” is said to offer “memorable characters and a unique graphical aesthetic” and “challenging platform fun mixed with modern sleek game design”. Not only that, the game is also inspired by classic platform games such as “Mega Man” and “Super Mario”. There are even plans to add a chiptune soundtrack to “Super Axe Boy” as well (80s chiptunes meets pumping garage rock tunes). So, Well. I don´t know about you, but I sure like the sound of that.
However, Matthias Falk won´t be able to dorealize anything of this without our help. As Falk is trying to collect 25,000 Euro on Kickstarter (“Super Axe Boy” has raised over 5,000 Euro so far. With 24 days left to go). Even so, I have a feeling that things will workout just fine for Falk though, as the Gaming community has already started to like “Super Axe Boy” (just check the comments on “Super Axe Boy´s” Steam Greenlight page). Nevertheless, it still remains to be seen whether “Super Axe Boy” will be able to reach any of its stretch goals or not. Because at this time, there are no plans for a Xbox One, PS4 or Wii U release (40K Euro = PS4, 50K Euro = Xbox One and 60K Euro = A Wii U release).
Even so, I´m still quite curious about “Super Axe Boy.” As the game seems to be a mix of everything that I loved about the 80s and early 90s platform games (Super Mario Bros, Mega Man, Jazz Jackrabbit with many more). I would also love to see how the “jump between 2D and 3D” feature works in-action as well. As for the background story of “Super Axe boy”, it´s a rather silly one. Axe Boy is a lumberjack, and one-day earth gets an unpleasant visit by the Beaverians (it´s an evil and sneaky alien beaver race). And unluckily for us, the Beaverians intend to build an intergalactic burger franchise (“Bad Taste” anyone?). So they will use us (humans) as slaves and meat for their burgers. Not only that, they steal all of our trees as well. So it´s our (Axe Boy´s) job to solve this “alien problem,” thus, save our planet and the human race from extinction. That´s far from everything there is to “Super Axe Boy” though, as there will be big bosses and puzzles in the game as well. Don´t get me wrong now, that sure sounds really great and all (with no doubt. Nevertheless, I still need to play the actual game myself before I say anything more about “Super Axe Boy”, at least for now. As for the release plans of “Super Axe Boy”, the game is set for a release next summer.
With that said, what do you guys think about “Super Axe Boy” so far? Is the game your cup of tea? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
