AT&T is joining the list of wireless carriers terminating two-year contracts beginning this Friday. Customers who wish to open a new plan with the carrier will have to either pay the full price for their device, or finance a brand-new device. You can also bring your own device, or with $0 down for well-qualified customers enroll in AT&T Next. This option allows you to upgrade to the latest device without being committed to your current device.
AT&T will continue to support two year agreements for devices and services that aren’t wireless phones, including tablets, wireless home phone service, mobile hotspots, and home Internet. Although you will be offered unlimited talk and text, there’s no mention of data plan changes on the company’s website so far. AT&T has always been known for their data prices that surge when it counts—similarly to their rival Verizon wireless.
As January 8th is the date these changes will take place, many customers who may be near the end of their current two-year agreements will have the option to continue on with more freedom, or leave to seek a better carrier who will also offer the non-contract option.
