A few weeks ago, we received the unfortunate news that Fallout 4 and Skyrim Remastered would not be supporting Mods on the PlayStation platform. Many PlayStation gamers were pretty angry and frustrated that they won’t have the chance to have a mess around with Bethesda’s top games. It wasn’t long until the finger-pointing began, whose fault was it? Sony’s, Bethesda’s or were they both equally to blame?
Well without a doubt, the outcry was enough to reverse the decision…As it’s now been confirmed that Mods are coming to PlayStation, and gamers can rejoice but don’t get too excited. However, there’s a few strings attached. You see. In their blog post, Bethesda explained mods will be coming to Skyrim first, but that’s not all. Because they went on further explaining “We and Sony have worked hard to make this possible. Mods on PlayStation 4 will allow you to modify and create your own content by using our Creation Kit available here. You will not be able to upload external assets with your PlayStation 4 mods, but you will be able to use any assets that come with the game, as most mods do”
So what does that mean? Well don’t expect to see Thomas the Tank engine mods on offer, in fact, the decision greatly limits content creation as you can’t use anything outside of the game. So you can’t have Macho Man Randy Savage replace every NPC or ehrm…Create your own sex dungeon. Sure you can say it’s better than nothing, but it really doesn’t leave you much to play around with. Nevertheless, the main attraction that comes with mods is pretty much gone. So from what seemed like good news quickly became a sigh of despair.
The compromise is that you can re-gig the world, and play around with internal assets, but it’s hardly something to get excited over which makes me wonder why they’re even bothering in the first place. We aren’t going to need many mods to make the game look better as it’s already getting a pretty sharp remaster with glorious 4K support and to be honest I’m happy with that. If I want to Mod something, I’d rather use it on an open platform like PC. As no matter how you dress it up mods will be limited on Console with or without Thomas The Tank Engine, something like that isn’t going to change my life, at least on console anyway. You’re not going to be able to produce massive 200 men battles without making your console melt, the best you’re going to get out of it is a mere distraction at best, while Mods have a firm home on PC it seems like a gimmick on console.
So, is this something to get upset over? Well, my standpoint as a console gamer is that it’s something I never had in the first place. Because in the last 15 to 20 years, I’ve never sincerely wanted to change anything about the games I’ve played. Sure, while some mods can really change a poor or average game to something special that’s only something you’ll see on PC. It’s never been a feature I’ve really cared for, if it was I’m pretty sure I’d own a PC. No one I know has gone out and bought a console with the expectation that they’re going to be able to mod their games. While we’re getting at least something to play around with it’s really not a big of an issue, unless you’re one of those people who truly hate Xbox, and those guys are getting something you aren’t it’s not a big deal.
It’s not all bad news as they explained in their blog post. As both Skyrim and Fallout 4 will be getting that lovely 4K treatment with the PlayStation Pro. Even so, don’t expect much excitement from the mods if you’re a PS4 console owner. Now obviously, the finger-pointing will with no doubt arise again blaming Sony for limiting mods on their platform, other fingers pointing at Bethesda on what all the fuss was about to begin with. Nevertheless, I say let them point all they want. Because in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter, and if it truly means so much to you, why on earth don’t you just use a PC?
It just seems like another fruitless thing to complain about. Even so, some users have even canceled their Skyrim Remastered Pre-Order because if this…So, was you really going to spend £40 to spend a few hours turning a dragon into a Budgie the Helicopter? Let´s be honest though, any form of disappointment isn’t going to be seen until people can get their hands on the mod tools, and we’ll see what they can do with them. So it might not be doom and gloom after all, so have a bit of optimism. I mean it’s the first-time anything like this has happened like this with the console. It’s early days yet, and I imagine things will get better before they get worse.
