Phillygames “City Of Broken Dreamers” is a very adult orientated (the game’s violence, language and lewd content is very 18+:ish) cyberpunk/sci-fi visual novel.
You see, “City of Broken Dreamers” is set in a dystopian megacorp future, genetic defection syndrome has been infecting the human population for years, and the number of cases has been increasing.
However, all of that has been given a hard pass as you (the player plays as a Ghost, a bounty hunter for hire) have just been given a case to find a missing girl who may be infected with this disease, and who may have gained some advantages with it. So you need to find her before some rival organizations do.
As for the game’s setting/theme itself. Well, “City of Broken Dreamers” is playing very much in same the style of movie and game titles such as “Blade Runner“, “X-Men” and “Deus Ex” (transhumanism is very much a theme of the game).
However, “City of Broken Dreamers” styles itself much more than just a visual novel, especially with it’s frequently animated 3D scenes – and not just for the adult stuff too.
I would also like to point out that “City of Broken Dreamers” story is very good, and there are very few occasional errors to be found throughout the game’s story.
Furthermore, every now and then you get a chance to unlock scenes if you can find hidden clues (but you only get once chance), and there is always a glossary available for reviewing who you know or describing details.
However, the glossary doesn’t detail everything you come across…So I really hope that it’s something that will get fixed in later updates of the game.
Other than that, there are quite a lot of different choices to pick from in the game, and the choices that you make certainly affect the story in the very short.
Even so, it’s worth mentioning that whether any decisions will carry on later in the story (when it’s been done), is yet unknown at the time of writing this preview.
With that said, let’s focus on the action aspects of “City of Broken Dreamers” shall we? Well, as I was saying. There are just a couple of action sequences to be found in the game, but this mostly happens later in the game. Nevertheless, the few action sequences that exist are pretty well handled as a whole.
I mean, sure, they aren’t overly violent. As the protagonist has a tendency to go for non-lethal hits. Even so, at the end of the day, the few action sequences that do exist, are rather well-made and cool looking.
So, what about the game’s character line-up then? Well, the characters you meet are certainly interesting, if somewhat cliqued. Hell, quite a few are even pretty shady, but nothing is clear-cut. On a positive note though, everyone does feel that they belong, and they act realistically.
As for music and sound effects. The game’s music sounds fine from the beginning to the end and goes really well with the scenes that are shown, and there’s even some occasional sound effects as well (which mainly shows up during the action sequences), and for the most part, the sound effects sound pretty good and solid.
So, all in all, Phillygames sure got something very nice and promising in the making with “City of Broken Dreamers” for sure. Because “City of Broken Dreamers” is with no doubt a very fascinating and entertaining episodic 18+ erotic cyberpunk/sci-fi visual novel.
In other words, if you’re into erotic visual novels, cyberpunk and sci-fi, then you should most definitely keep your eyes and ears open for the full release of “City of Broken Dreamers”.
+ Frequently 3D animated sequences.
+ Intriguing story.
+ Sex scenes are animated and pretty frequent.
+ Very beautiful visuals.
+ The soundtrack is pretty darn groovy.
+ Plenty of hot babes.
+ A nice mix of sci-fi and cyberpunk.
– One slight continuity error later on, and one grammatical error, but neither are a problem.
– Not everything is detailed in the glossary.
– Glossary text is rather small.
Sound and music: 3/5
Replay value: 3/5
“City Of Broken Dreamers” is a very intriguing episodic adult sci-fi story, with violence, bad language and quite a bit of intrigue. However, what really makes the game stand out from the crowd is its 3D animated sequences and animated sex scenes, so it would be well worth keeping an eye on.
