Chute Apps “Rogue Star Rescue” is a top-down roguelite/bullet hell shooter with occasional tower defence gameplay thrown in for good measure as well as the odd bit of platforming too!

rogue star rescue bring it on

“Rogue Star Rescue” is a pretty darn cool retro-like bullet hell/roguelite top-down shooter.

Anyways, I think you get the idea. So here’s a short summary of the game’s background story.

When some pesky aliens invade your spaceship, you need to escape before you end up as dinner for them. In order to do so, you need to make your way to your means of escape: a spacecraft.

rogue star rescue kill them wall lights ffs

There are nice little touches to be found in the game here and there. For example, you’re able to shoot wall lights and whatnot.

Obviously, being a demo, things are lacking, but even so. The game is still showing promise. For example, each level seems to be randomly generated.

In other words, each new game will be unique, and which can contain gaps that you have to use a jet-pack to get across as well as moving platforms.

rogue star rescue awesome graphics

Rogue Star Rescue’s graphics are pretty simple, but I don’t mind really since the visuals are nicely animated and well done.

Your character (which looks like someone from the Dilbert comics) is armed with (aside from the aforementioned jet-pack) a laser pistol with unlimited ammo and a shotgun (with limited ammo).

rogue star rescue the upgrade shop

This is what the upgrade “shop” looks like at the very end of the “Rogue Star Rescue” demo.

It’s also worth mentioning that both the laser pistol and the shotgun doesn’t just hit enemies, but the said weapons also knock them backwards. So if they are positioned correctly, it’s possible to kill several by knocking them in gaps in the map.

rogue star rescue the tower defense mode

Say hello to Rogue Star Rescue’s tower defense mode.

Other than that, occasionally killed enemies drop goodies, but most of the time its credits. So that means that you have to hunt around for extra supplies, which usually appear once you enter a room.

rogue star rescue stats screen

The game stats screen is a rather simple one at it, but it gets the job done nevertheless.

As for map sizes. Well, the game’s demo map is reasonably sized. So you’ll find the exit after a reasonable amount of time, at which point the game changes to tower defense mode.

And that’s when you put to use all the coins you received by killing enemies to good use, and you do so by buying traps and defenses to deal with the waves of oncoming aliens!

And once the main wave has been dealt with, a boss appears at which point he is dealt with too.

rogue star rescue sniper girl

You (the player) got twelve different worlds, five different playable characters, tons of different weapons and over one hundred different endings to enjoy in “Rogue Star Rescue”.

This part makes for a nice change in the game with no doubt. However, whether it’s through design or not. The aliens will insist on trying to walk through your defenses, rather than follow a certain path.

rogue star rescue the flamethrower dude

“Rogue Star Rescue” is an interesting and promising roguelite bullet hell shooter with no doubt. However, the game is far from flawless. Furthermore, Rogue Star Rescue’s faith on Kickstarter is still unknown at this time.

Well, once it has been completed, the demo is over. I mean, sure. Whilst you can buy upgrades and there is a planet selection level, you still aren’t allowed to start a new level.

Nevertheless, in overall, “Rogue Star Rescue” is an interesting and promising roguelite bullet hell shooter for sure.

Even so, it still remains to be seen if this type of game will be popular on Kickstarter or not.

Pros:
+ Title music is good, although the in-game music isn’t as good
+ Tons of different weapons and items
+ Nice simple graphics which are nicely animated
+ Random maps
+ Five different playable characters

Cons:
– The game’s Kickstarter fate is unknown
– Rooms are a bit barren
– Placing items is a bit fiddly

Gameplay: 3/5
Graphics: 3/5
Sound and music: 3/5
Controls: 3/5
Replay value: 3/5
Story: 3/5

tgg grade 3 out of 5

Verdict: 3/5
Rogue Star Rescue is off to a good start since it’s demo does show some interesting mechanics and some nice graphics. So hopefully, with more content (and backing) f Rogue Star Rescue could become a great game over time.
