Even though I have been a fan of Team 17´s “Worms” series since the very first game (the original game launched back in 1995). I still have to admit that it´s been years since the last time I played a “Worms” title. And the main reason behind that is because I felt like Team 17 had forgotten the series roots after “Worms World Party” (the game was released in 2001). And that´s also why I wasn´t really impressed with games such as “Worms 3D”, “Worms Revolution”, “Worms Clan Wars”, “Worms 4” or “Worms Battlegrounds” (I´m not a huge fan of the 3D art style that´s found in Revolution and Clan Wars).

So as you might imagine, I was “somewhat” skeptical when I heard about “Worms W.M.D.” in August last year. As I´ve been disappointed so many times in the past. However, once I got a chance to play the E3 pre-alpha demo of the game all of that changed. As I started to believe in the “Worms” series again. And please allow me to tell you why. You see. “Worms W.M.D.” is a mix of everything that I loved from the old-school Worms games (“Worms”, “Worms 2”, “Worms Armageddon” and “Worms World Party”). Simply put, you could say that Team 17 has taken the best parts of the old games and mixed it up with some brand-new content and features.

You can use a bunch of different vehicles in “Worms W.M.D.”, vehicles such as tanks and choppers (you will also be able to us big mecha robots in the full version of the game).

And better yet, Team 17 has painted up a beautiful world in “Worms W.M.D.” with the game´s cartoon-like graphics (everything looks hand painted). So I was quite surprised that the game ran as smoothly as it did on my computer, since my Gaming PC is almost three years old now. Furthermore, for the first time in years, I had tons of fun while playing a new “Worms” title. So in a way, I felt like when I played the original “Worms” game (which I did back in 1995-1996 sometime). I was also happy to find out that “Worms W.M.D.” contains a lot of funny comments and humor (just like in the good Ol´days).

And even though I just played an early alpha version of “Worms W.M.D.,” it didn´t take long for me to realize that the game is going to be even more fun to play the game over LAN and the Internet. And this time we´re going to get tons of old (and new) weapons, vehicles and gadgets at our disposal. In the matter of fact, you can even craft your own weapons and whatnot in “Worms W.M.D.”. And that´s going to bring a lot of madness into the online matches for sure, as a game could get turned around in the matter of seconds thanks to some well executed crafting skills (not to mention the fact that air plans can drop random crates here and there, and one could also find hidden crates and items throughout the map in question as well).

You can also craft different kinds of weapons and whatnot, by collecting ingredients from crates.

That´s freaking awesome of course, sadly enough though. There were some down sides to the alpha demo of “Worms W.M.D.”. I´m aware that Team 17 did indeed point some of these flaws for me when they reached out to us about the demo. However, I did find some bugs which they didn´t mention to us. Like the fact that the game became unplayable for me when I updated the game via Steam (the problems started with update number one or two). As the game gets a black screen of death once I boot the game up (I can´t even get to the game´s main menu anymore). And for some-odd reason whatnot, “Worms W.M.D.” doesn´t recognize my Logitech Rumblepad II controller either. And you can´t finish the last stage of the demo without a gamepad, as you need it in-order to access the crafting tool menu.

And that´s also the reason why I haven´t been able to record any videos for “Worms W.M.D.”, as I can´t even start the game anymore…And that is a darn shame of course. As I truly enjoyed the game (I hope that I will be able to record a gameplay video in the near future!). Nevertheless, hopefully my preview post will be enough (for now) to give you a good idea what the demo of the game was like. Especially since “Worms W.M.D.” is set for a release on the 23rd of August (for Windows, Xbox One and PS4).

Pros:
+ Awesome 2D cartoon-like graphics
+ Tons of achievements
+ Plenty of weapons and vehicles that you can use
+ Funny comments
+ Crafting!
+ Worms W.M.D is really fun to play
+ A lot of vehicles (you can drive tanks and helicopters in the demo)

Cons:
– The game can become unplayable if you´re unlucky (black screen of death)
– My Rumblepad II controller did not work in the demo
– Bugs O´ plenty
