You know what they say about the world being a small place sometimes? Well, I had one of those “it’s a small world” moments last night. You see, I just happen to like the C64 computer a whole lot, and I’m also from Sweden. Well, that just happens to be the case with Andreas Wallström as well. Because Wallström is a Swede that hopes to bring his C64 book “Commodore 64: For the Love of a Machine” to the masses. Long story short, I enjoyed the idea behind Wallström’s book a whole lot. So much so that I promised to get the word out about his “Commodore 64: For the Love of a Machine” Kickstarter campaign (Wallström need to collect 630,000 Swedish Krona in-order to fund his project). Well, I kept my word.
So, what exactly is the “For the Love of a Machine” book all about then? Well, here’s what Wallström had to say about his upcoming C64 book:
“Hello!
My name is Andreas Wallström and welcome to the Commodore 64: For the Love of a Machine Kickstarter campaign! Mainly thanks to dabbling with the Commodore 64 since 1984, I now work as a graphic designer and photographer. Because I have something of an obsession with the C64, I thought it would be a great idea to combine these three interests in a beautifully designed coffee-table book that celebrates the world’s most popular computer.
In order to be able to achieve this, I NEED YOUR HELP! Please back the campaign and spread the word about the book. In return, I will create a fun book filled to the brim with C64 nostalgia!” – Andreas Wallström, the mind behind the Commodore 64: For the Love of a Machine project
And here’s what we could expect from the “For the Love of a Machine” book:
The book in brief:
– Approx. 220 x 307 mm, hardback, 224 pages (or more if stretch goals are met).
– In-depth interviews with Al Charpentier and Bob Yannes who created the C64, the VIC-II graphics chip and the SID sound chip.
– In-depth interviews with the people who created some of the fantastic games we remember so fondly, including one cover artist and one cracker sharing their stories. Ally Noble, Antony Crowther, Ben Daglish, Chris Hülsbeck, Dave Collier, Dave Rowe, Dawn Jones, Donna Steiner-Buttlaire, John Twiddy, Karen Davies-Downey and Zoltan Kelemen (Mr.Z/Triad) are all going to be in it.
– The book will be edited by Terry Stickland, a skilled writer and professional proof-reader. Other book collaborators to include Vanja Utne (Mermaid/Genesis Project) and Mark Hardisty (author of A Gremlin in the Works).
– Professional photography of industry legends, people from the scene and C64-related events.
– Scans of Rob Hubbard’s original music notes. Gain insight into how Rob used to compose his famous C64 tunes!
– Striking spreads featuring screenshots from games with commentary from the people who created them!
– Pixel art, both old and new, including some very new pixel art created especially for this book!
In other words, it’s a book that’s going to fit like a glove for any C64 lover out there. However, there is one “little” catch to all of this, and that would be the fact that Wallström need about 66,000 USD to make “Commodore 64: For the Love of a Machine” into a reality. Nevertheless, the Kickstarter campaign is doing pretty darn well so far. As about 1/3 of the Kickstarter goal has already been reached (there is also about 26 days left to go on the campaign). So I wish Wallström the best of luck with his “For the Love of a Machine” Kickstarter campaign =)
