I have a friend who usually blames gravity, whether it’s slipping and falling or things falling down at what he assumed was a selected victim of physics. However, you can’t shift the blame when you’re the one sending ships on an off trajectory that would eventually collide with another planet, some asteroids, or getting too close to a black hole. “Graviteer: Cosmic Expedition” is a mobile game where your planet hopes to get to the edge of the universe. While you won’t get to Milliways to get the dish of the day, you can get a decent score if you’re good enough.
Graviteer’s gameplay is as simple as it can be: tap the screen and send your ship on the right trajectory to get caught in a planet’s gravitational force. From there you spin around on the orbit and jump to the next planet. For those of you, who have played Kerbel Space Program or know Astrophysics you very well know how this works. However, it’s more than just going from planet to planet. Eventually, you’ll run into asteroids to dodge (which can be difficult since you speed up as you travel) as well as black holes to escape.
“Graviteer” is addicting but the game can be challenging as well, since you can only move along the path of the trajectory you launch your ship from. If you made some progress but made a miscalculation by crashing into a planet or flying off the screen. Then you have the ability to continue and pick up from the last planet one time. Nevertheless, the continue option requires you to watch a 30-second ad which might be worth it if you´re having a good streak going down. Just be sure to have your WiFi on since this game has ads. With galaxies and ships to unlock, you’ll be at it for a while. However, you’ll have fun while you successfully navigate the course.
Graphics have a modern retro design that is quite similar to the classic game Asteroid. The designs are simple with planets featuring the same patterns from time to time. However, it adds to that charm it’s going for. There are 32 different spaceships to unlock and while they’re all triangles, it’s hard not to pick a favorite with a pattern that you like. The background is simple with cluster of dots for stars and with a fixed position, it does make your trek to the end of the universe feel like peanuts to space. There is only one music track in the game, and it goes with the sense of space exploration well. It’s subtle enough not to be distracting and can be catchy if you like chimes. There are no sound effects to be heard in the game (which makes sense since this game takes place in space). Even so, every time you lose your spaceship the phone gently vibrates.
Pros:
+ Challenging game that uses basic Astrophysics for fun.
+ Plenty to unlock between spaceships and galaxies.
Cons:
– Graviteer is somewhat ad heavy. As there is ads at the bottom of the screen with watching videos to get another shot.
Gameplay: 4.5/5
Graphics: 3.5/5
Sound/Music: 3/5
Controls: 4.5/5
Replay value: 4/5
Verdict: 4/5
Graviteer is a fun little app that will pull you back in. The trek to a high score may be difficult, but the addiction is enough to shoot for the stars.
