I´m quite aware that the most of you are probably busy with either “Doom“, “Dark Souls 3” or “Uncharted 4“. However, I for once decided to try something “else” for a change. So I sat down with Calavera Studio´s action/platform “Doom 1” parody game “MiniDOOM” (the whole game is made in GameMaker Studio). And I sure don´t regret doing that, as the game is really addicting and fun to play (think “Brutal Doom” meets “Super Metroid” and “Soldat”). I was actually quite pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of the game.

minidoom slaughter

It´s time to rip and tear!

And even though “MiniDoom” is a rather short game (you can finish the game in about 20-40 minutes on normal). You still come back for more. As there are secrets to be found, two difficulties and plenty of monsters to kill. And due to the fact that it´s super easy to start playing “MiniDoom” (mouse and keyboard controls). You will have no problems at all with kicking-off your killing spree in hell, awesome indeed. However, there are some down sides to “MiniDOOM” though.

minidoom explosions

Yes, you can blow shit up in “MiniDOOM”, just make sure that you don´t blow yourself up in the process.

Right off the bat, since I´ve already mentioned that the game is pretty short. I´ll just jump directly into the game´s biggest con. And that would be the bugs, for starter. You run the risk of having the game crash if you pause the game, and if you´re really unlucky. The controls might revolt against you (that happens if you accidentally click outside of the “MiniDOOM” game window). Nevertheless, “MiniDOOM” still offers a rock-solid gameplay experience (even if it´s a rather short one). And who knows? There might actually be a full version of “MiniDOOM” in the future? I for one really hope so, as I truly enjoyed the game.

minidoom ghostbusters

Who you gonna call? Well, the Doomguy of course!

Time will tell I guess, for here and now though. “MiniDOOM” has been out since the 13th of May. So the game is available for everyone to download and enjoy for free, and in my opinion. Calavera Studio´s description of “MiniDOOM” is very spot on:

“MiniDOOM is very short parody game based on the classic game DOOM 1. We created it as part of a game programing course we gave over here to show how to make a simple platformer on GameMaker Studio. You can play MiniDOOM below, over at newgrounds of you can download it a bit further on this page! Enjoy!”

minidoom boss time

Don´t worry, I got this one. I´ll just let the good Ol´ BFG9000 do all the talking for me.

You don´t have to take my or Calavera Studio´s word on it though, as you can watch my “MiniDOOM” video further down the page 😉
