I’ve been surprised by games before. I’ve found some games to be an incredible disappointment after hoping so hard for something good. There have been some that I was surprised at how pleasant they were despite bad reviews. Nevertheless, nothing quite prepared me for the shock that I got from Typoman Revised. An updated version of the Wii U game, this game has two things I like: Puzzles and Wordplay. As an avid fan of both mind games and puns, this appealed to me. I was hoping for a fun, light-hearted puzzle game with some pleasing mind games based on words. Was I ever wrong.
I was dropped into a bleak, dismal world where light was fading, and a lone hero (literally the word hero) was left to try and save it. The setting is bleak, the music somber and appropriate. You feel a sense of dread and despair just walking through the world. However, all is not lost. There are letters all around, and sometimes, they form a little light in the darkness. They come together to save you from the ravages of everything around you. And not only that, you can move the letters around, change the words, or even use machines to summon new letters to form new words. Using these words you can solve the various puzzles and open the doors that are in your path.
Not only that, there is help, a muse will try and help you. No literally, the word muse (glowing in their wings) will try and help you. However, FEAR and HATE are also out to stop you. You will even run across LIE, a mysterious beast which can do very interesting things to words, all leading you to your final destination. This game has elements where you have to do things quickly, forcing you to think and spell fast. It has a dark and scary world along side its puzzles and word play. It is nothing like what I was expecting from the concept.
I have never been so happy to be so wrong.
The game itself has one of the deepest narratives for a game without spoken words. Any narrative is done through quotes from actual literature, or the anthropomorphization of the words in the game. Actions speak just as loudly as the words, and the words have actions themselves. The game itself is short, only a couple of hours long, but it packs a lot of story in those few hours, and a lot of entertainment into it. The soundtrack is beautiful. The graphics are wonderful, and the gameplay is engaging. It has been a long time since a game pulled me in so fully and taken me on such a ride. There is very little wrong with this game.
