***Update 1 – 2016-08-08 – 23:37 CEST***
I (Robin Ek, TGG) was just informed that matters have gone from bad to worse for the AM2R team, because this is what Metroid Database tweeted out less than three hours ago:
In other words, the people who were involved in the fan made “Metroid 2” remake project could end up in legal trouble with Nintendo´s lawyers (the AM2R links and info have already been removed from the official homepage). I think Metroid Database is safe though, as they only hosted a mirror download site for “AM2R”. Nevertheless, Nintendo has most definitely hit an all-time low by doing this. I mean, they are basically attacking their own fans and consumers (have you ever heard of the expression “don’t bite the hand that feeds” Nintendo?).
And as I see it, none of this would have happened if Nintendo had created the “Metroid 2” remake game themselves. However, this is not the first time that fans get fed-up with game developers (or publishers) not giving them the games that they want. So they simply end up creating those games for themselves (and the Gaming community) instead.
And who can blame them for doing that? Hell, I have even had serious thoughts about creating “Half-Life 3” myself at times (yes, I´m that fed-up waiting for the game to be released). Well, you get my point. So all we can do now is to hope for the best in the case with the legal issues concerning the AM2R project and its team (I have suggested the team to talk to the Video Game Attorney).

You know, sadly enough I had a strong feeling that something like this would happen. As Nintendo is well-known for killing fan projects and whatnot (the Big N has been doing that for years). So it came as no surprise to me when I heard that it appears as if Nintendo has done a DMCA takedown on Metroid 2 Remake´s (Project AM2R) homepage:
And just like always when something likes this happens, there is this one person who claims some like “but they have the right to protect their IP”. Fair enough, but here´s the thing. Nintendo hasn´t given a damn about the “Metroid” IP for years. And as far as I know, Nintendo didn´t bother all that much with Metroid´s 30th anniversary either. In the matter of fact, the fan community did more to celebrate Samus Aran and Metroid´s 30th birthday, then they did…And quite frankly, I think that there is very slim (to none) chance that Nintendo will let go of Project AM2R (you do remember what happened to the “Chrono Trigger 2” fan project right?).
However, just like in the case with SEGA Vs “Streets of Rage Remake”. Someone will most likely host the Project AM2R else where. Nevertheless, I would much rather have seen Nintendo put in the same amount of effort to kill-off AM2R, in actually creating a new and REAL “Metroid” game that stars Samus Aran in the lead role again.
