Not so long ago I (Ken W “flea” @SloppyMcfloppy6) had the great pleasure to do an interview with the incredibly talented Japanese cosplayer Omi Kero (aka Omi Gibson). So I talked with Omi about everything from cosplay, movies, video games to her plans for 2016. So with that said, please enjoy my interview with Omi =)
Ken TGG
For those who don’t know about you, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Omi
Hi, I’m OMI, and I am a professional cosplayer from Japan. I have been doing this for about 10 years.
Ken TGG
Great. So what made you want to do cosplay? And for how long have you been doing this?
Omi
Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to look like one of those power rangers. So I started making costumes and that started it, I guess.
Ken TGG
How did you come up with the name OMI GIBSON?
Omi
The name is a mixture of Akiomi Otuka (the voice of Solid Snake) and Mel Gibson. And they just happen to be two of my favorite actors.
Ken TGG
A lot of people seem to think your cosplay is unique and weird, off course in a good way. Are you aware of that?
Omi
Yes! I’m actually happy that people think that way. It’s not that I want to feel special or anything. However, as a professional if it’s something that is already out there, then there’s no point for me to do that right? I can just look at it, and I don’t have to do it myself. I end up doing the same thing.
Ken TGG
You have done a lot of “Metal Gear Solid” cosplays throughout the years. So are you a fan of the MGS series?
Omi
Yes, I am! I’m also a big fan of Hideo Kojima. I have played the MGS series, “Snatcher”, “Policenauts” and many other games that Kojima has created.
Ken TGG
Me too! So, is there any other video games that you enjoy playing?
Omi
I’ve been playing a lot of “Fallout 4” as of lately. It´s so much fun!
Ken TGG
What do you like doing in your spare time besides video games?
Omi
I like watching movies, drawing, playing video games.
Ken TGG
What kind of movies do you enjoy?
Omi
I like action movies. I watched “John wick” just recently. And I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Ken TGG
For your professional career, do you do anything to stay in shape? (exercise or eating healthy, etc.).
Omi
Nope lol. I just try not to eat and drink too much (as in fast food, soda and alcohol).
Ken TGG
Back to cosplay, have you ever been to any Comic-Con´s (conventions about comic books) before?
Omi
I actually haven’t. I’ve always wanted to though.
Ken TGG
If you ever get a chance to go overseas for a convention, would you take it?
Omi
I was actually offered the chance to do so a couple of times before. However, I turned them off, because I was too busy at the time so I couldn’t go.
Ken TGG
You’ve been in the public eyes for a long time. Have you ever wondered what people think about you?
Omi
A lot of people see me as a crazy person because of what I do. So they usually get surprised when they meet me in real-life lol. I’m a normal person! It always makes me laugh.
Ken TGG
Have you ever had a problem when making costumes?
Omi
Always. One time I made a crocodile cap from MGS3. When I was making that I inhaled fumed glue and spray gas. That was really hard.
Ken TGG
I heard that you received a lot of feedback based on your “Mad Max” cosplay?
Omi
I actually wanted to be one of the war boys. But I’m glad people liked it 😉
Ken TGG
After 10 years of cosplaying, how do you stay motivated? And do you have any tips and advice for other cosplayers out there?
Omi
Not sure I’m the one to ask that question lol but I do what is true to me. Do what makes you happy… W-was that okay? Lol
Ken TGG
Off course 😉 So, what are your plans for 2016?
Omi
I’m making a photo book. And hopefully, it will be released by the end of this year, but there are just too many photos to go thorough. 10 years of work…Also I’m having a photo exhibition. So I’m hoping the photo book will be finished by then.
Ken TGG
Will your photo book be released in the US?
Omi
Well, if someone from the US wants it, then “maybe” on Amazon? I’ll try my very best to make it happen. So keep your fingers crossed 🙂
Ken TGG
Thank you very much for your time. It was a pleasure to meet you.
Omi
You too! Thanks for interviewing me. And thanks everyone for reading this. Bye!
