They’re back! That’s right, the fleet footed bleating animals are back, and this time they are fully armed and willing to shoot – and headbutt – anything that that moves.

goat of duty weapons

Goat of duty’s weapons (and a whole lot of other things) looks like they have been taken straight out of “Unreal Tournament”. I don’t mind that though, because the UT weapons are pretty darn bad-ass.

34BigThings “Goat of Duty” is a fast-paced multi-player arena shooter, where goats fight each other before the round’s timer ends, in order to become the top goat.

There is an impressive number of arenas already, despite the game being in Early Access, but don’t expect the levels to be clean and tidy or particularly well organized.

goat of duty a goat on a mission

The locations vary in “Goat of Duty”, and most of the time the stages are graphically decent (if not great even).

Furthermore, whilst level design goes well with the game, you can’t help but feel that quite a few things were placed randomly without too much thought. This is mainly prevalent in the open maps, whilst the enclosed ones fair much better with object placement.

goat of duty levelling up

Leveling up widens the variety of hats that are available to you in the game.

As for weapons. The available weapons in “Goat of Duty” looks like something that’s been taken right out of “Unreal Tournament” (at least in their types). Your default weapon is a nail gun with infinite ammo, but gives low damage and isn’t too bad really.

goat of duty available weapons

These are the available weapons in most modes in “Goat of Duty”.

Other weapons include flying discs that bounce of walls; a short-range flamethrower (so you can have your goat nice and crispy); a sniper rifle that is fairly useless in a fast-paced game; an explosive grenade thrower (very useful for getting multiple kills, especially at close range) and of course, the obligatory rocket launcher, to name but a few.

goat of duty the enemy

Enemy goats are easy to spot with the red outline (give em hell!).

As awesome as that might sound though, there is no secondary fire for some of the weapons…And for the weapons that do have one it’s usually for aiming (or detonating something), although three have alternative weapons fire.

goat of duty goats vs electrical cubes

It’s great fun shoving goats onto the electrical cubes (yes, it’s just as fun as it sounds, if not more so).

Aside from your weapons. There is also one other item that can be used both offensively and defensively,  and that’s the ability to get slightly mad and run fast.

Aside from the obvious way of using it (running away from danger), you can also do the opposite and ram your enemy, sending them flying in whatever direction is currently in vogue.

goat of duty goats a selection of costumes

You got a handful of different costumes to pick from in the game, and most of them are just as crazy as they are hilarious.

So if you time things correctly, then you may be able to get a kill in before your enemy goat has time to find their hooves again.

Other than that, there are quite a few game modes present. For example, the “Free for all” (death-match) is the one that will probably be played the most.

There are other modes as well, and those include “Herd Wars” (Team Death-match), “Gun DM” (start with the best weapon and change down every two kills) and “Fus Ro Arena” (shove enemy out of the arena).

goat of duty goats the points system

Always given a quick tally of the points received at the end of each round.

You can either play against the computer or host your own game (with humans replacing computer players as they join).

And whilst there are no shortage of people joining the game (which is nice to see with an Early Access game), it’s all peer-to-peer, and with no ability to kick or ban players from joining, especially if they are lagging. So hopefully that’s something appropriate will be added later.

goat of duty killing spree

Goat of duty’s mix of craziness and intense action in me think about a mix of “Unreal Tournament”, “goat simulator” and “Serious Sam”.

After each round, points are awarded based on performance and added to your goats status level.  Once a certain level is reached, you are awarded with a new goat costume.

goat of duty rip and tear

The controls are responsive and work like a charm most of the time. In other words, if you die, then it’s not the controls fault but YOUR fault.

As for the game’s controls. Well, the controls are responsive, and the weapons are decent (if rather unimaginative). Graphically, everything is okay – it’s certainly not going to win many awards in that department, but it does the job.

However, there are a few problems at the moment. Had a few disconnects when hosting, and have been stuck in the scenery a few times as well, thanks to the “Goat Simulator School Of Physics”, but on the whole the game has been stable.

goat of duty a goat named rambo

“Goat of duty” might just be the craziest FPS game that I have ever played. It’s all good though, since the game is crazy fun to play.

So in overall, “Goat of Duty” is a very fun game even in its current state. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the current player base can be maintained over time though.

Even so, if 34BigThings adds extra maps, weapons and so forth to the game, then “Goat of Duty” could become very popular with no doubt.

In other words, if you like FPS games, craziness and goats, then “Goat of Duty” might just be the game for you.

Pros:
+ The game is very funny.
+ The Music is rather catchy.
+ The game plays well, and the controls are responsive.
+ Controls are fine.
+ Humans are actually playing (yay!).
+ Reasonable price.

Cons:
– Being P2P, you’re going to get a lot of laggy players that you can’t do anything about.
– Graphics are possible a bit scrappy and rather ordinary in places.
– No real imagination with regards to weapons.  It’s all pretty standard.  Graphically somewhat underwhelming too.
– A few bugs here and there: Got stuck in the scenery and a few disconnections too.
– Does occasionally feel that the computer players are cheating.

Gameplay: 4/5
Graphics: 3/5
Sound and music: 3/5
Controls: 3/5
Replay value: 4/5
Story: 1/5

Verdict: 4/5
Goat Of Duty is an FPS that can’t be taken seriously. Nevertheless, it’s fun to play, and can only get better over time, as long as the developers keep upgrading the program. Furthermore, you get pretty good value for your money as well. So “Goat of Duty” is most definitely worth looking into if you like crazy FPS games.
