There´s plenty of companies that want´s a piece of the pie when it comes to virtual reality market. Samsung, Oculus Rift, Razer, Sony, Google. Even Valve want´s to join the party as well with their own VR technology”SteamVR” (which is used for HTC´s “Vive” VR headset for example).
But just like in the case with everything else. You have to be at the top of the foodchain to stay alive. And that makes one wonder if Valves SteamVR has what it takes to stay in front of the competition?
So far so good though. As the almost 40 minute long “Virtual Reality 2015” video about SteamVR impressed me quite a lot. Let´s just say that i saw a lot of potential in SteamVR.
But i have to try it myself before i know for sure. Anyhow, this is what Valve´s Chet Faliszek had to say about SteamVR.
“[People have] seen Star Trek and the Holodeck, and they want to run around and play a current FPS. That’s where we started. We ported Team Fortress 2 over. It turns out, that’s actually a bad game for VR. VR scales more like real life – things aren’t just flying at you all the time. That ends up being not a limitation, but something special. It’s a new opportunity for us. But there’s so little we know.” – Chet Faliszek , Valve
