There has always been a need for a scapegoat when times get rough. And ever since last summer (August to be exact) #GamerGate has been media´s (mainstream and game-related media) number one scapegoat target for everything and nothing (misogyny, doxxing, death threats, etc.). However, media is not the only ones who have blamed a lot of things on #GamerGate. No, there are also a “few” individuals who have done that as well, and a perfect example of that would-be Brianna Wu (founder of Giant Spacekat). I´m not even exaggerating either. As Miss Wu has blamed #GamerGate for quite a lot of things, like the following, for example:
I can´t find my biological parents. It’s GamerGate´s fault!
Vox media attempted to link Cecil the Lion’s death to Gamergate (Brianna Wu agreed with Vox)
Blame #GamerGate (or white people) for the Ferguson riot
I´m honestly surprised that no one (media in particular) hasn’t tried to connect Donald Trumps statements about illegal immigrants (which some people thought of as a racist statement) to #GamerGate (as media see´s them as a hate/terrorist group). I thought of this since Donald Trump retweeted a #GamerGate supporter just recently (CommissarOfGG, as seen in the picture down below).
And let´s not forget about past events such as:
What it feels like to be a Gamergate target – ABC news
The E3 2015 Anita Sarkeesian poster incident (it was first said that GG made those posters)
The law and order SVU episode (the whole episode made GG look like a terrorist/hate group)
Tim Schafer and the GDC 2015 Sockpuppet scandal (most of Game media backed up Tim Schafer, even though he made an ass out of himself)
#gamer – A full-length documentary film about online harassment (a one-sided documentary about GG)
With that said, I think that most people would draw the conclusion that media has been (and still are) very one-sided in the case with #GamerGate since it´s beginning in August last year. At least if they (people in general) took the time to look up everything that the media has stated in the past. Speaking of which, the media very rarely talks about the achievements and all the good things that #GamerGate has done for the past 12 months. For example, did you know that GG has raised over $110,000 for charity so far? Or that GG has called out corrupt Game journalists (and news sites such as ABC, Gawker and Vox media) since day one pretty much?
Well, if you don´t. I can´t really blame you, because most of these things don´t ever get mentioned by main stream-media. So it´s rather hard to get the whole (“true”) picture of #GamerGate, if you´re only spoon feed with the news that media spits out 24/7. My point would be this, don´t believe everything that you read, hear or see in media (no matter if it´s #GamerGate related or not). Instead, try to form your own opinion about things. In fact, here is a good thumb rule: “There are two sides to every story, and then there’s the truth”.
Here is another example of this. I had no idea that a handful of people has actually tried to shut down the #SPJAirplay event in Miami (which launches on the 15th of August), and I wouldn´t have found out about this if I haven´t kept a close eye on my/our Twitter flow. Anyhow, I really hope that there won´t be any “bomb threat incidents” (GGinDC anyone?) against the #GamerGate meet-up in Miami. As it seems like there will be quite a lot of people who will join the event, so it would be a real let down if someone ruined all the joy for everyone.
